The Public Library Challenge

Did you know that the Cincinnati Library is in the top 10 of all libraries nationwide?! In addition to every imaginable book and magazine, the library has tons of movies, books on tape/CD, music CDs and music scores. They'll even deliver most items to the branch that's closest to you.

So here's a challenge to all of you who are willing to try a little project. For the rest of the consumed series, don't buy or rent anything that's available at the library. No Netflix, no amazon.com, no Barnes and Noble. Nada. Zilch.

The goal of this sort of a project is two-fold:

First, it will help you to exercise a little bit of delayed gratification, because it might take a few days to get the item you want. Or you might not get to watch the latest blockbuster. And that's okay. My husband Brian was telling me yesterday how he's excited for a few movies that are coming out soon. We laughed that it will be nice to see them next February when they finally make it to our library branch. (No, it doesn't really take that long. At least not always.)

Second, if you are the type that likes to buy the things that you can get at the library, this can act as a spending hiatus. Test yourself to see if you really want to buy the item after you've read/watched it. My general rule is that only if I've read a book and absolutely loved it to the point that I will read it over and over again... only then will I allow myself to buy it (at least at full price).

So onward and upward! Leave a comment if you're willing to take on the challenge, and then keep us posted on your progress (i.e. great discoveries, frustrations, new resolutions, etc.).

Hey! Cool Blog!

We already use the library all the time since Rob is a librarian. If you go to the library's website (www.cincinnatilibrary.org) then you can order any book, and many of the dvd's,and a great selection of CDs as well, and have them delivered to your local branch. I think that the only thing you can't order is feature films. Lots of local branches have drive thru windows, so you don't even have to leave your car to get your book or cd.

Also, even though kids can get library cards, too, we've found it much easier to keep everything on one library card in order to keep track of it. You can also have notices sent to your email account to help you keep track of due dates and such.

We've also found that we never buy movies because you can get them free there, and who, besides a 3 year old, watches a movie more than once? Also, we rarely buy books for the same reason. Sometimes you have to wait for a newly released book, and some books never make it to the library (if you like to read obscure stuff).

Actually, the library gets pretty much every feature film the day it's released on dvd. However, it's always first come first serve for getting a copy. The library staff is not allowed to check them out until they've been in circulation (which stinks for our family), so they get entered into the system and then immediately placed on a shelf.

Matthew and I took this challenge long ago, and have saved a ton of money! Just remember to turn them in on time!!!

Also, you can check your due dates, and even renew stuff online.

We have watched entire seasons of shows from the library- Smallville, Grey's Anatomy, etc

They also have a lot of cool National Geographic stuff. We're currently on the waiting list for Planet Earth.
